Scores on the Doors

If you are thinking about eating out, or ordering from a takeaway, you might want to consider checking the company’s latest food hygiene rating first.

For several years now, the Food Standards Agency have been running the Food Hygiene Rating System (FHRS), in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This is more commonly known as ‘Scores on the Doors‘. This publicly available information is published at http://ratings.food.gov.uk/

In practice, this means that local authorities, in partnership with the Food Standards Agency, inspect establishments that serve food, looking at areas such as how food is handled, prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored; the environment in which the food is prepared and stored, including structure, cleanliness, layout, lighting and ventilation; and how the establishment records and manages its food to ensure it is safe for consumers.

Once inspected, food premises are awarded a rating from 0 (urgent improvement necessary), to 5 (very good). You will often see food premises displaying a sticker on their front window, displaying their food hygiene rating, although as it is not currently a legal requirement to display this, you are more likely to see businesses displaying good results, rather than the lower scores.

DDS International work with a number of clients to help them implement food safety systems that achieve very good results on the Food Hygiene Rating System. Together with the creation of food safety systems that are tailored to individual clients, DDS assist with staff training, periodic auditing, management feedback and enforcement support to ensure a robust solution is in place at all times.
